Fraud signals versus fraud decisions
How to compare identity APIs, risk scores and ready-made detection

In brief:
How to compare identity APIs, risk scores and ready-made detection
##
A signal is an input
An IP reputation result, device ID or proxy flag tells you something about a request. It does not automatically say whether to approve a login, investigate an account or block a transaction. The signal can still be valuable if a team has the rules and data to use it.
##
A score compresses several inputs
A score can prioritize review, but buyers need to know its scale, how it changes over time and what action each band supports. Ask for sample outputs from a legitimate user and a known abusive case. Avoid treating the vendor's editorial ranking score on this site as a product risk score.
##
A ready detection names the behavior
Some platforms link events into a recognizable pattern, such as one person operating multiple accounts or a real account appearing across implausible locations. Check whether the detection is available on your plan, how it is delivered and whether reviewers can act on it.
##
Match output to workflow
For a small engineering team, a direct account-level result may reduce the rules it must build. A mature risk team may prefer flexible raw signals. Compare the operational work on the same test cases, then look at the price per relevant event.
##
Keep identity scope explicit
A device link does not establish that two accounts belong to one person. A shared household device may be legitimate, while one person can use several devices. Check the scope of every identifier and combine it with event history before treating a match as account abuse.
##
Ask for the failure response
Inspect responses for a clean event, an ambiguous event and a timeout. Your team needs to distinguish a negative finding from an unavailable signal. Decide how those states affect the protected action, and verify that support can explain the decision and offer a recovery route.
